Leadership is intrinsically bound up with questions of ethics. Leaders’ aspirations, relationships to others, day-to-day practices, decisions, and behaviors have all shown to have been impacted by moral component. The fact that leaders are supposed to lead by example, they set tone at the top, lead with an attitude of “Do what I say as well as what I do.”, makes it critically important that the Ethics of the leader be in the right place for the organization to steer along the right path.

The values promoted by a leader establish and reinforce organizational values and have a significant effect upon the behavior exhibited by the team. An ethical leadership helps create positive relationships built on respect, openness, and trust within the organization environment. Ethical leadership matters in the context of implementing organizational mandates, more so during any change, as followers need to trust the integrity of their leaders.

Ethical leadership in an organization impacts the consideration behavior, honesty, trust in the leader, interactional fairness, and help predict outcomes such as perceived effectiveness of leaders, followers’ job satisfaction and dedication, and their willingness to report problems (this feedback openness could be a game changing attribute for a progressive organization) to management. Leaders should be a key source of ethical guidance for employees.

An effective and ethical leader must display the traits/ characteristics such as: Honesty, Dignity and respectfulness, Attitude to serve, Justice and Community building. Leadership is all about values, and it is impossible to be a leader if you lack the awareness and concern for your own personal values. Moral and ethical aspects define leadership.
